Men's basketball edged by UNH in OT 71-65

Bruce records double-double; Bearcats lead for most of game before visitors rally to gain split

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting New Hampshire (8-7, 7-5 America East) used a 10-2 run to start overtime and held off Binghamton (2-13, 2-10 AE) 71-65 in an America East men's basketball game Sunday afternoon from Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center.

The Bearcats led for most of the game and led 48-41 with under six minutes to play in regulation before UNH rallied. Sophomore guard Dan Petcash's driving layup and free throw gave BU its final lead of the game with 56 seconds left in regulation, 56-54. The Wildcats tied it with 40 seconds left and BU left points on the table with a front-end free throw miss with 15 seconds left. The teams went to overtime after UNH was called for a travel with 3 seconds left.

In the extra period, UNH made 4-of-6 shots, including a 3-pointer, and converted 6-of-9 from the line to outscore BU 15-9.

"It's a tough result today," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "But I'm proud of the way we played all weekend ... we had great energy and emotion. Today was a good basketball game. They just outplayed us in overtime. We had a couple of shots go in and out and missed a free throw late ... so we had our chances to win. Hopefully it's something to build off."

Sophomore guard Brenton Mills led four Bearcats in double figures with 14 points. Petcash had 12 points and seven rebounds and Bruce and sophomore Bryce Beamer chipped in 11 points apiece. Bruce added 11 rebounds for his 13th career double-double.

Binghamton led 13-5 out of the gate before UNH countered with a 19-4 run that gave them a brief lead, 24-17, late in the first half. But the Bearcats closed the half with a 9-0 run to take a 26-24 edge into break. Petcash had four of those points and BU forced UNH into 0-for-5 shooting with three turnovers.

In the second half, BU opened with an 8-2 run to take a 34-26 lead - the final three points of the run coming on a Beamer 3-pointer. New Hampshire didn't take its first lead until 3:12 left in regulation.
