Women's soccer beats NJIT in 2OT 2-1

Gilmore nets game-winner as BU moves into first place tie in America East standings

NEWARK, N.J. - Freshman forward Peyton Gilmore tapped in the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to give visiting Binghamton women's soccer (8-5-1, 4-1 America East) a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win over NJIT (4-10, 2-3 AE) Sunday afternoon from Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium. The win, BU's sixth in its last seven games, lifted the Bearcats into a first place tie in the America East standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

On the winning play, junior midfielder Lexi Vegoda sent a ball into the box that was temporarily cleared by the Highlander defense. But the header went straight to sophomore midfielder Victoria McKnight, who ripped a hard 20-yarder at goal. The NJIT keeper couldn't fully control the shot and the ensuing rebound sat there for a charging Gilmore, who netted her second collegiate game-winner from the doorstep. Gilmore's shot was BU's 30th of the game and gave the Bearcats a much-deserved result after controlling play for much of the 83+ scoreless minutes after the teams each scored early in the first half.

NJIT opened the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute. Binghamton countered in the 27th minute when freshman midfielder Maria Poulos tallied her first collegiate goal. Poulos took a lateral pass from classmate Alex Marsteller and struck a rising shot from 22 yards. The shot skimmed off an NJIT defender's head and carried into the top left corner to even the game.

Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made six saves, including a tipped save that caromed off the goal post midway through the first half.

"We are pleased to get a well-earned three points," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We had a slow start and NJIT capitalized but a couple of attacking adjustments helped change that. We created a good number of opportunities but missed the final piece with the last pass or the quality of the shot at times. But our players kept grinding for a game-winner and it was terrific to see Peyton finish the rebound off Tori's initial shot. I'm proud of our players for keeping up their fight throughout double overtime and finding a way to get a big conference win."

The Bearcats next play at reigning conference champion Stony Brook Thursday night.
