Women's soccer extends unbeaten streak with draw

Bearcats and Stony Brook play to scoreless tie on Long Island; BU keeps share of first place in standings

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Visiting Binghamton women's soccer (8-5-2, 4-1-1 America East) battled to a scoreless draw with Stony Brook (5-7-2, 2-3-1 AE) Thursday night at LaValle Stadium. With the result, BU extended its unbeaten streak to four games and picked up a point in the standings after beginning the night tied for first place.

The Bearcats held a 16-15 shots edge and pressed for the game-winner throughout the second overtime period, totaling five shots in the final 10-minute period. The final chance was a 20-yard direct kick off the left foot of sophomore Lexi Vegoda with just 1:25 left. Vegoda's driving shot was saved by the Seawolves keeper.

"Our players performed with a lot of heart and effort tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We played with a more attacking mindset in the second half and perhaps were unlucky to have not found a game winner then or in overtime. But at the end of the day getting a tie on the road against the defending champs is a quality result and if we can play with that work rate in our final few matches, we can put ourselves in a good position. We'll take the road point and now shift our focus to a tough Maine side on Sunday."

Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made five saves to notch her sixth shutout of the season. Poltorak received plenty of support from her four backs, who each played the full 110 minutes. Steady in their final line of defense were seniors Nicole Scudero, Gabby Piontkowski and Kayla MacKenzie and junior Grace Vittoria.

Binghamton played the game without its top two scorers, Maya Anand (6 goals, 15 points) and Olivia McKnight (4 goals, 10 points).

The Bearcats return home to host Maine at noon on Sunday.
