Men’s Soccer Edged by No. 24 Cornell 2-1

Big Red nets tiebreaking goal early in the second half

VESTAL, N.Y. – Wilson Eisner scored the game-winning goal in the 49th minute, lifting Cornell (9-2-1) to a 2-1 win over Binghamton (7-6-1) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The match marked the second time this season that the Bearcats have squared off against a nationally-ranked opponent.

Eisener headed in a cross from Emeka Eneli, who kept the ball from going over the end line. It was his second goal of the year.

Earlier in the match, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on junior forward Oliver Svalander's fifth goal of the season. He took a long pass from junior back Michael Bush and fired it into the upper-left corner of the net. For the season, Svalander is now tied for the team lead with five goals.

The Big Red drew even in the 36th minute on a goal by Henry Hylbert. He headed in a cross from Tate Keir for his third goal of the season.

With time running down in regulation, Cornell had a chance to pad its lead but Harry Fuller missed a penalty kick. His attempt went wide right of the goal.

Cornell came into the match averaging 2.37 goals per game and finished the game with a 13-6 shot advantage. In addition, the Big Red also took 12 corner kicks.

"I thought we played pretty good tonight but we are disappointed to have not gotten the result," head coach Paul Marco said. "Cornell is a very good team and it was a great soccer match to watch."

Junior goalkeeper Mats Roorda played the first half for the Bearcats and finished with a pair of saves. Redshirt junior goalkeeper P.J. Parker played the final 45 minutes and recorded three saves.

Binghamton hosts its annual Senior Day match on Saturday at 1 p.m. against NJIT.

NOTES: Junior forward Ethan Homler also has five goals this season and ranks first on the team with 11 total points. Svalander is second with 10 total points.
