VESTAL, N.Y. – Resgan Watkins scored in the third minute of overtime, lifting NJIT (4-10-1, 2-4-0 AE) to a 3-2 victory over Binghamton (7-7-1, 2-4-0 AE) in an America East Men's Soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Complex. The game marked the Bearcats' annual senior day game.
In a match marked by a pair of lead changes, Watkins had the final word when he got a loose ball in the Bearcat end of the field. He then dribbled the ball through the defense and fired it into the net from close range.
Binghamton appeared to have control of the match in the second half as sophomore redshirt midfielder
Anthony Lazaridis scored in the 66th and 74th minutes to give his team a 2-1 lead. Senior back
Kosta Nika got the assist on the first goal while redshirt sophomore forward
Rory Anderson was credited with the helper on the second goal.
Lazaridis is the first Binghamton player to have scored twice in a match since current graduate student midfielder
Noah Luescher did the same against Albany on Feb. 24, 2021.
In the 84th minute, however, NJIT got the equalizer on Matt Moran's first goal of the season. It was assisted by Tomas Jorge.
The fireworks of the second half and overtime contrasted with the opening 45 minutes of the match. NJIT scored the lone goal of the period on a free kick by Joao Costa in just the fourth minute of play.
"We are gutted to have lost this match," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We came out poorly to start the match but played very well for most of the second half. But we didn't manage the game well in the end. We are very disappointed and now have two must-win games to make the playoffs."
NJIT finished with a 14-12 shot advantage. In shots on goal, however, they held a commanding 11-3 advantage.
Junior goalkeeper
Mats Roorda stopped two shots in the first half while redshirt junior goalkeeper
P.J. Parker made six saves during the rest of the match.
Prior to the game, Binghamton held its annual Senior Day Ceremony. Luescher and Nika were honored, along with
Tim Leuenberger,
Ryan Pyszka and
Andrew McDonnell.
Binghamton travels to Albany on Thursday for a 7 p.m. conference match.
NOTE: Lazaridis' two goals marks his career high in a match. He is now tied for third place on the team with Luescher – both of whom have scored three times so far this season.
