Women's soccer drops regular season finale 1-0

Bearcats edged by Albany; two teams will play again Sunday in America East quarterfinals

VESTAL, N.Y. - Visiting Albany (5-7-4, 4-3-2 America East) tallied the game-winner in the 66th minute and pinned a 1-0 loss on Binghamton women's soccer (8-7-3, 4-3-2 AE) in the regular season finale Thursday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The two teams will now trade host roles and square off in an America East quarterfinal game Sunday afternoon in Albany.

Already assured of a postseason berth, BU was looking to rekindle its offense but despite 14 shots and eight corner kicks, the Bearcats were kept off the board.

"It's obviously not the result we were looking for tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We need to recover quickly and get ready for another battle on Sunday - this time in the postseason. We'll just take it one game at a time from there."

After a scoreless first half when BU held possession for 57 percent of the time, the teams both picked up the pace in the second half with 15 combined shots. The Great Danes struck for the winner when Olivia Piraino received a cross from the left and finished eight yards out to the far post.

Nine minutes earlier, senior back Nicole Scudero sent a ball off the crossbar at the other end - one of several near-misses for the Bearcats. Binghamton also was the recipient of a tough call with just under eight minutes remaining when sophomore midfielder Olivia McKnight was taken down two yards inside the box. After consultation, the officials ruled the infraction occurred outside the 18, resulting in a free kick instead of a penalty kick.

The Bearcats had a chance to secure the No. 2 seed and a bye into a home semifinal game with a win, but instead will take the No. 5 seed and face the No. 4 Great Danes at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.

On Friday afternoon, the America East will announce the all-conference recipients, with several Bearcats likely to earn recognition.
