VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior forwards
Birna Benonysdottir and
Clare Traeger combined for 47 points, leading Binghamton (3-2) to a 104-45 win over Mansfield (1-2) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at the Events Center. The victory capped the Bearcats' five-game home stand to start the 2021-22 season.
Benonysdottir was 10-of-15 from the floor – including 4-of-6 from three-point range. It marked the second time in her career that she has reached the 20-point mark in scoring.
Traeger, meanwhile, shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor. She also tied a career high with 11 rebounds to record her second career double-double. In addition, Traeger dished out a career-high five assists and tied her career high with four steals. For the season, Traeger has now reached the 20-point mark twice.
Also reaching double figures in scoring for the Bearcats were freshman guard
Ella Wanzer, who set her career high with 15 points, and senior guard
Hayley Moore, who tied her career high with 14 points.
The 104 points represents the Bearcats' highest-scoring game since they won 105-64 at Colgate on Jan. 29, 2001. That was the final season before the Bearcats moved up to the NCAA Division I level. The 104 points against Mansfield is the fifth-highest scoring output in Binghamton's 49-year program history.
Also against Mansfield, the Bearcats shot 58.6 percent from the field (35-of-60). That is the seventh-highest field goal percentage in program history.
In addition, the Bearcats dished out 26 assists, which ties the second-best total in program history. They also recorded 26 assists against Cortland on Nov. 13, 2017.
Furthermore, Binghamton drained 13 of its three-point field goal attempts. That represents the fifth-highest total in program history.
Freshman
Genevieve Coleman finished with nine points and eight rebounds while
Cassidy Roberts ended up with six points and four assists. Also finishing with six points was freshman guard
Camila Kirschenbaum.
Binghamton heads to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Dec. 1 for a 7 p.m. game.
