LAS VEGAS, NV. - The Binghamton wrestling team competed at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Friday, as three Bearcats made it to Saturday's action. No. 11 Lou DePrez, No. 30 Joe Doyle and Anthony Sobotker will all wrestle in the consolation bracket and will compete for spots on the podium.
DePrez defeated Luke Stout of Princeton by a 10-4 decision to advance to the quarterfinals before dropping a tight 2-0 decision to No. 10 Eric Schultz (Nebraska). Against Stout, DePrez was strong to start, and did not relinquish a takedown throughout the match. In the quarterfinal, DePrez also didn't allow a takedown, but was unable to get an escape point in the third to tie the score. He will face Navy's Jacob Koser Saturday.
Doyle created some fireworks in his first match, throwing Robert Winters (N. Colorado) on his back in the first period to advance. Up against No. 1 seeded Tate Orndorff, Doyle nearly earned a takedown in the first period, but Orndorff went on to get a 10-2 major decision. Doyle will face Michael Woulfe (Purdue) Saturday.
133-pounder Anthony Sobotker dropped his first matchup with No. 7 seeded Haiden Drury, but rebounded with a big pin in the consolation round (Caleb Gross, South Dakota State). He will join DePrez with an EIWA matchup Saturday morning against Mason Clarke (Columbia).
Nick Lombard picked up two wins Friday, a 16-5 major decision in the pigtail round, and a 3-2 decision over Navy's PJ Crane in the consolation round. He fell to two seeded opponents.
Brevin Cassella won his opening matchup against Cael Carlson of Minnesota by decision, and battled Julian Ramirez of Cornell. The sophomore almost defeated the nationally ranked Ramirez, who took down No. 1 Shane Griffith last week. He later dropped a 5-3 decision in the consolation bracket.
Michael Zarif fought against the No. 5 seed in his opening match, falling by a 2-0 decision. He earned a 10-5 decision in the consolation bracket before being defeated in his final match of the evening.
DePrez, Doyle and Sobotker will continue to wrestle Saturday. Action begins at noon eastern (9 a.m. pacific).
