Women’s Basketball Falls Short at Lehigh 79-68

Bowman nets career-high 27 points, Benonysdottir adds 19 points

VESTAL, N.Y. – Host Lehigh (6-3) rallied from 15 points down to defeat Binghamton (3-4) 79-68 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Stabler Arena. The game marked the second straight road contest for the Bearcats.

Facing a Mountain Hawk team that is currently ranked No. 19 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll, the Bearcats got off to a hot start and took a 39-28 halftime lead. In the second half, however, Lehigh reeled off 51 points to complete the comeback.

The Bearcats produced solid offensive numbers, shooting 47 percent from the field (27-58), 40 percent from three-point range (4-10) and 76 percent from the free throw line (10-13). The battle on the boards, however, proved decisive. The Mountain Hawks finished with a 47-33 advantage and turned 24 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.

"I thought we did a terrific job in the first half of doing all of the little things on defense," head coach Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Unfortunately, Lehigh is a really good team and they came out swinging in the second half and having them get 21 second-chance points was big."

Junior guard Denai Bowman poured in a game-high and career-best 27 points to go along with four rebounds, two blocks and four steals. She went 12-for-24 from the field and sank three of her four free throw attempts. For the season, Bowman has reached the 20-point mark in scoring twice and is now averaging a career-best 13.3 points per game.

Junior forward Birna Benonysdottir finished with 19 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor in the process. She also had five rebounds and three assists.

Lehigh, meanwhile, had four players post double figures in scoring, led by Frannie Hottinger with 17 points. Megan Walker netted 16 points, followed by Emma Grothaus (15) and Mackenzie Kramer (14).

Binghamton led by as much as 39-24 late in the second period but Lehigh poured in 29 points in the third period to go up 57-56. In the fourth period, the Bearcat offense struggled, hitting only four of 12 shots while the Mountain Hawks tacked on another 22 points.

Junior forward Jalyn Van Dyke and senior guard Hayley Moore each finished with eight points. Van Dyke also added seven rebounds and three assists.

Binghamton hosts Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
