Women’s Basketball Beats Pitt-Johnstown 62-51

Bowman scores game-high 23 points, adds nine rebounds and five assists

VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior guard Denai Bowman finished with a game-high 23 points, nine rebounds and five assists, leading Binghamton (4-4) to a 62-51 win over Pitt-Johnstown (3-4) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory was the Bearcats' second straight triumph on their home floor.

Bowman, who has now reached the 20-point mark in scoring two straight games, shot 10-14 from the field and canned three of her four free throw attempts. Her nine rebounds marks her season high and the five assists ties her career best.

Bowman, who is now averaging a career-best 14.5 points per game, is the first Binghamton player to reach the 20-point mark in back-to-back games since Kai Moon did the same from Feb. 12-15, 2020. She has now scored at least 20 points three times this season and seven times during her career.

Also reaching double figures in scoring against Pitt-Johnstown were junior forward Birna Benonysdottir and freshman Ella Wanzer – each of whom netted 11 points. Benonysdottir also added five assists while Wanzer tallied three rebounds, a pair of assists and a steal.

For most of the game, the Bearcats had a tough time breaking away from the Mountain Cats. They led by just four points at the half (26-22) and 45-37 through three periods.

It was a 10-1 spurt in the opening 4:46 of the fourth period that gave Binghamton the breathing room it needed. Bowman had four of her points during that stretch and both Wanzer and senior guard Haley Moore drained three-point field goals, giving the Bearcats a 55-38 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown got to within 60-51 with 52 seconds left in regulation on a basket by Peyton Alazaus. By then, however, the Bearcats had the separation they needed to secure the victory.

Ashley Norling led Pitt-Johnstown with 18 points. Alazaus and Olivia Fasick each added 12 points.

For the game, the Bearcats shot 42 percent from the field (23-54) and held a 42-32 rebounding advantage. In addition, Binghamton held a commanding 23-2 lead in points off the bench.

Freshman forward Genevieve Coleman had seven points, seven rebounds and a game-high and career-best three blocks.

Binghamton travels to Eastern Michigan on Friday for a 4 p.m. game.
