Volleyball drops pair of matches with Hartford

Freshman Stefana Stan registers 21 kills in nightcap on .450 hitting percentage

The Binghamton University volleyball team fell to Hartford in a pair of America East road matches Wednesday afternoon. The Bearcats dropped the opener 16-25, 22-25, 20-25 before the finale that finished 15-25, 25-19, 17-25, 19-25.

In the first matchup, BU opened a 5-2 lead after kills by Francela Ulate and Stephanie Gatto. Hartford came back with a 5-0 run and did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the set en route to the 25-15 finish.

In the second set, the Hawks led throughout before Binghamton made a push at the end. Trailing 23-15, the Bearcats went on to score seven of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 24-22, but Hartford finished out the set on the next point.

Neither team took control early in the third set, and the Bearcats eventually took a 16-14 advantage that turned into an 18-16 edge after another Ulate kill. From there, Hartford went on to score nine of the last 11 points to take the set and match.

The second match saw Hartford take the first set, but BU stormed back with a strong second set. Freshman Stefana Stan led the way, notching seven kills in the frame. Trailing 10-7, Binghamton would finish with three separate runs of at least four consecutive points, and a final push of three straight scores to win, 25-19.

Hartford would go on to take the final two sets to take the second match, three sets to one, despite Stan capping off a career match.

She finished with 21 kills with a .450 hitting percentage to go along with six digs. Tyra Wilson added eight kills and three blocks. Ulate finished with three service aces for the match and seven on the day. She now has an America East leading 13 aces this season.

The Bearcats have a quick turnaround, and will head to N.J.I.T. for America East pod play Sunday. They are slated to take on New Hampshire at 5 p.m. to kick things off.
