DePrez goes 2-0 on day one of NCAA Championships

Roes, Nolan pick up first career NCAA Championship victories

The Binghamton University wrestling team competed on day one of the NCAA Championships Thursday in St. Louis, Mo. No. 3 seeded Lou DePrez led the way for BU, picking up two victories to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow. Freshman Micah Roes and Jacob Nolan also picked up wins, the first of their careers at championships.

DePrez opened up against Pittsburgh's Gregg Harvey (No. 30) and used a strong first period to vault himself to the second round. Harvey would add a takedown in the second, but a strong third and a ride time point for DePrez was more than enough for the win. The redshirt junior earned a 6-4 decision.

In his second round matchup, DePrez dominated from the start, getting a takedown on Campbell's Caleb Hopkins with a strong ride out for over two minutes. The only point Hopkins would get was on a stall, and DePrez added a late escape and bonus point for ride time to get the 4-1 decision.

He will face Rutgers' John Poznanski in the quarterfinal. The two have not faced eachother in their careers. Poznanski is a redshirt freshman with a career record of 11-3.

Micah Roes began his day with a matchup against Brandon Courtney of Arizona State. Courtney, the No. 3 seed managed to defeat Roes, but the true freshman rebounded with a 10-4 decision over Iowa State's Kysen Terukina in the consolation prelim matchup. In that match, Roes nearly got a pin and used four back points to advance. In his next matchup, Roes was eliminated from the championship following a late pin by No.14 Jaret Lane.

174-pound sophomore Jacob Nolan fell by a 6-0 decision in his opening matchup with Drew Hughes, but like Roes, rebounded to defeat Viirginia's Victor Marcelli 4-2 in a prelim consolation round. With the bout tied at two, Nolan got a takedown in the final seconds and held Marcelli down on the mat to secure the win. Nolan was then defeated in a tight battle by No. 19 Michael O'Malley (Drexel), 3-1 in overtime, and was eliminated from the tournament.

Joe Doyle opened his day with a near fall on No. 3 seeded Matt Stencel (CMU). Stencel was on his back for a substantial amount of time, but no pin was awarded. Doyle eventually lost the matchup by fall in the third period. In his second bout, Doyle dropped a close 5-2 decision to Oklahoma's Josh Heindselman and was eliminated from the championship.

DePrez will represent the Bearcats tomorrow in the quarterfinals starting at 11 a.m. ET. Coverage will be on ESPNU.
