Bearcats and Bonnies set for a 1 PM match start

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton women's tennis team travels to St. Bonaventure this Saturday as it opens its 2021 season. It's been over a year since they've played a match and the Bearcats are excited to get back out and compete.

"After more than a year since our last competition I'm so grateful to have our little piece of the Bearcat family together again," head coach Libby McGovern said. "Watching the team's camaraderie and enjoyment interacting together daily is something that I have missed."

The Bearcats return almost every player from last season, including senior standout Michelle Eisenberg. Eisenberg won 13 combined singles and doubles matches last year, leading the team with six singles wins before COVID-19 brought the remainder of the season to a screeching halt.

"I know that each and every player in this program is so excited for the opportunity to get back to competing and finding some normality in a year that has been full of chaos and upheaval," McGovern said. "We are grateful for the chance to travel, compete and represent Binghamton on the tennis court."

Eisenberg is joined by seniors Ashley Granieri and Emily Kong as the leaders of McGovern's 2021 squad. The duo of Granieri and Kong bring experience to the underclassmen in both singles and doubles play.

Sophomores Julia Gumieniak, Lara Kaplan and Jamie Lau also return for their second season as Bearcats. The three sophomores combined for 13 singles points and seven doubles points in 2019-2020.

McGovern welcomed one newcomer to the mix this season in Abby Ackroyd. Ackroyd comes to Binghamton from Alberta, Canada where she competed in the U18 Canadian National Championships.

The Bearcats will compete in seven away matches this season. After traveling to St. Bonaventure this weekend (3/20), the Bearcats will face Temple (3/27) and Siena (3/28). Binghamton then heads to Buffalo, NY to take on the Bulls (4/3). The following weekend, BU will compete against Stony Brook (4/9) and Colgate University (4/11). The Bearcats wrap up their season in New Jersey against Seton Hall (4/17).
