WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Host Hartford (3-1, 3-1 America East) swept a twinbill from Binghamton baseball (1-3, 1-3 AE) Sunday afternoon at Fiondella Field, winning 2-1 and 6-2. Â
Hartford won the opener in walkoff fashion, using a bases loaded hit batter to score the decisive run in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams had six hits apiece.
The Bearcats trailed 1-0 before tying it in the fifth. Shortstop
Jake Evans led off with a single and with one out, right fielder
Daniel Franchi ripped a double to left field, sending Evans to third. Center fielder
Shane Marshall plated Evans with an RBI groundout.
Starter
Jack Collins left after six strong innings. He held the Hawks to just one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
But Hartford used a leadoff single in their final frame to set the table and after a walk and infield error, the Hawks plated the winning run.
Franchi went 2-for-3 and was the lone Bearcat with two hits. Â
In Game 2, BU was limited to five hits, spoiling a good start from
Josh Kopcza (L, 0-1), who went 5.0 innings and allowed just one earned run before leaving with a 2-1 deficit.
The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second, but Hartford countered with two in the third, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh off BU's bullpen. Hartford scored four of its runs with two outs. Binghamton added a closing run in the eighth.
In the second, third baseman
Justin Drpich and DH
Eric Madenberg hit back-to-back singles and Drpich took third on a fly ball. Evans then delivered an RBI groundout to give BU a 1-0 edge. In the eighth, left fielder
Tommy Reifler hit a leadoff double and two batters later, scored on an RBI single by Marshall – his second RBI of the day.
The Bearcats next host UMass Lowell Saturday and Sunday at NYSEG Stadium downtown in the team's home opening series. Â
