Men’s Lacrosse Falls to UMBC 7-6

Dolan records 17 saves, MacKinney nets two goals as Bearcats split season series with Retrievers

BALTIMORE, MD -- The Binghamton University men's lacrosse team (2-2) fell to UMBC (4-1, 3-1 AE) 7-6 Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium in Baltimore. Junior goalie Teddy Dolan put together another sensational effort, recording 17 saves to keep BU in the game.

Nearly 124 minutes of lacrosse has been played between Binghamton and UMBC over a four day span. Both games ended in a one goal decision.

"I thought our team played hard and fought for 60 minutes today" head coach Kevin McKeown said.  "Dolan stepped up and played fantastic again for the second game in a row. We'll look at the film, learn from it and focus on getting better next week."

The first period opened with two goals by UMBC to kick off the game. The Bearcats answered on a Daniel MacKinney goal off a feed from William Talbot-Shere and a Kevin Winkoff finish at the end of the period.

The second period featured four total scores, two by each team. Thomas Greenblatt and Ryan McBeth tallied the two goals for the Bearcats and the score was tied at four at  the break.

MacKinney notched a goal early in the third to snap the tie to give Binghamton a 5-4 edge. UMBC would go on to even the score at five to close out the third period.

In a back and forth final quarter, Binghamton's Quinn O'Hara tallied his second goal of the season to break the 5-5 tie and give the Bearcats the lead just over three minutes into the final period. The Retrievers countered O'Hara's goal with two of their own to give themselves the 7-6 advantage. Binghamton had several scoring chances in the final minutes, but UMBC was able to keep them at bay and escape with the 7-6 victory.

Face-off specialist Matthew DeSouza was 10 for 17 on the day while Kyle Tiernan led BU with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

The Bearcats return home to take on N.J.I.T. Opening face off is set for Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
