The Binghamton University women's lacrosse team dropped a home contest by a score of 16-10 Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal. The Retrievers used a hot start to build a lead that proved too large to overcome in the second half.
"We did not play to our standard today," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "We took plays off, especially in the draw area, and UMBC took advantage of that. We are working on consistency and finding ways to convert defensive stops into goals. Across the board, we have to be better and dig deeper to win possessions."
In the first half, Alyssa Sanchez opened the scoring with a driving goal, but UMBC came back to score five straight to lead 5-1. Emily Masera single handedly scored two of the game's next three goals to bring BU back in it before the Retrievers closed out the half scoring five of the final six goals scored.
Trailing 11-4 to start the second, Jamie Golderman broke an 11-minute scoreless drought for both sides with her first goal of the game. The Retrievers would do enough for the remainder of the game to keep Binghamton at bay, as the two sides each scored six times in the final 19 minutes of the contest.
In those closing minutes, freshman midfielder Hayley Weltner scored her first collegiate goal and added another to finish with two on the day. Alissa Franze also scored her first of the season.
Golderman led the Bearcats with two goals and three assists. Jordan Taylor had a career-high six ground balls.
Taylor Passuello made 14 saves while Emily Manning made two saves without relinquishing a goal in the final minutes.
BU will next hit the road for a contest with New Hampshire on Saturday, April 3. Opening draw is set for 11 a.m.
