Women’s lacrosse powers past Hartford 20-12

Volkmann notches program-record 10 points to help take down the Hawks

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse (2-3, 2-3 America East) scored 13 first-half goals en route to a 20-12 win over visiting Hartford (0-6) Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. Paige Volkmann led the offense, notching seven goals along with three assists in the victory.  Her ten points surpassed the previous program records by Lauren Wetherell '06 and Leanne Musso '08 (nine points).

"We were excited to get back out there after the long layover," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "Hartford is relentless and never gives up, but I was proud of how we executed on offense, especially in the first half. We talked with Paige about leading the offense this week and she did just that."

The Bearcats took control of the game immediately, scoring five of the first six goals in the contest. Volkmann scored three of those goals, while Kristen Scheidel and Rebecca Korn also got on the scoresheet. Scheidel's finish was the first of her career.

The Bearcats maintained control for the entire frame. Hartford pulled to within 9-4, but BU vaulted to a 13-5 edge at the break.

Hartford opened the second half on a roll, scoring four unanswered goals after a Binghamton finish to kick it off. The Bearcats proceeded to call a timeout, and answered with three straight goals to dash the Hawks' comeback hopes.

When the final whistle blew, Binghamton finished with a 20-12 win, with seven different players tallying goals.

Following Volkmann's effort, Hayley Weltner had her strongest game as a Bearcat with four goals and five ground balls. Korn added a hat-trick and two assists. Jesse Barer had five draw controls.

Binghamton will prepare to face No. 9 Stony Brook Friday afternoon on Long Island.
