DURHAM, N.H. - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team put together a strong comeback victory over New Hampshire in America East action Wednesday afternoon in Durham. The Bearcats battled back from a 6-4 halftime deficit, and a weather delay in the second half to pull out the 13-10 victory over the Wildcats.
"Today was a battle of the elements and our team embraced that in the second half in all the right ways," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "I wouldn't say we played our best game, but we stepped up when we needed it the most. Weather delays are always tough to manage - how each team will show up when you resume play. This group showed their resiliency today and how much heart they have. We have a big slate still ahead though and need to dial some things in before our next game."
Paige Volkmann led the way for BU, putting together her second straight dominant game. The senior had four goals and three assists on the afternoon, including two goals in a span of 14 seconds to essentially seal the victory. Freshman midfielder Jesse Barer added a hat-trick and two draw controls.
The Bearcats opened the contest with two straight goals to take an early lead. The first was put away by Volkmann, and the second was netted by Jamie Golderman on a feed from Volkmann. New Hampshire fired back with five of the next six goals, and clamped down the defense to lead 6-4 at the break.
The Wildcats opened the second frame with a goal, but Binghamton retaliated with two straight to climb back in it. The game would go back-and-forth until consecutive goals by Volkmann and Rebecca Korn put BU up 9-8. Prior to the weather delay, UNH added one more goal to tie the score with 9:19 remaining.
When play resumed, momentum quickly went in favor of the Bearcats, as they reeled off four straight goals to run away with the win. Barer scored the first of the run, followed by two straight finishes by Volkmann to put the contest out of reach. A final goal by Barer at the 4:16 mark was enough for Binghamton, and New Hampshire managed just one goal in the final minutes to complete the 13-10 final score.
Behind Volkmann and Barer, Madison Murphy scored twice and added an assist. Korn had two goals and Kristen Scheidel notched one of her own. Binghamton freshmen scored five of the team's first seven goals.
Sofia Afkham and Alyssa Sanchez combined for seven draw controls.
The Bearcats will head south for a contest at UMBC Saturday afternoon. Opening draw is set for noon.
