Box Score BALTIMORE, MD. - The Binghamton women's lacrosse team dropped a high-scoring matchup with UMBC by a score of 27-16 Saturday afternoon in Baltimore. The Retrievers used a 6-0 run to start the game and a 4-0 run to close out the first half to take control, as BU fell short at a comeback attempt.
Freshman Madison Murphy highlighted Binghamton's offensive performance, scoring a career-high five goals and adding an assist. Hayley Weltner, Paige Volkmann and Jamie Golderman added two goals apiece, with Volkmann and Golderman each adding an assist.
To kick off the contest, UMBC started out hot, scoring six times in a span of six minutes. The Bearcats gradually climbed back into the contest, scoring twice in a row to make it 6-2. BU and UMBC would each go on runs during the middle stages of the frame, as the hosts advantage fluctuated between six and four goals for a majority of the period.
With 10:39 remaining in the first half, a Murphy goal cut the deficit to 9-6, and an Emily Masera goal with 4:06 remaining made it 12-8, but the Retrievers scored four unanswered goals to lead 16-8 at the break.
Binghamton struck first in the second half on another finish by Murphy before three straight goals by UMBC. Volkmann and Isabella Meli proceeded to score two straight to bring it to 19-11, but that was as close as the deficit would get for the remainder of the game, finishing with the 27-16 final score.
Binghamton will head home for a contest with Albany on Saturday, May 1. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
