Women's soccer blanks New Hampshire 1-0

Piantadosi nets game-winner in 59th minute; BU controls game throughout with 62% possession, 12-3 shots margin

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (2-1, 2-1 America East) controlled play from the opening whistle and used a second-half tally to blank visiting New Hampshire (5-2, 2-2 AE) 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

After sitting idle for two weeks after last week's scheduled opponent (Hartford) ended their season early, the Bearcats looked eager and poised for a result. Binghamton had a lopsided margin of possession (62%), a 12-3 shots advantage and in the end, gained a measure of revenge against a Wildcats program that had eliminated BU in the 2019 tournament quarterfinals and had won six of the last nine head-to-head matches.

"Our players were fabulous today," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "We wanted a complete performance and we got it throughout the game. I thought we were good enough to perhaps get a second goal but credit to New Hampshire and especially their goalie. Our possession was good, I like the way we defended and the intensity and energy and on the bench really showed. We had some great training sessions and it built up to a complete performance today. It was a hard-earned win."

The game-winner came off the foot (again) of junior forward Stefania Piantadosi in the 59th minute. Freshman back Emma Colling sent a long ball from midfield into the left side of the box and Piantadosi outmuscled a UNH defender for possession and then slotted her shot inside the near post from eight yards. It was Piantadosi's second game-winner of the season. She scored the overtime winner in BU's 2-1 victory at Albany on March 7.

The Bearcats nearly made it 2-0 with 20:15 left when sophomore midfielder Olivia McKnight was taken down in the box and BU was awarded a penalty kick. But Victoria McKnight's low strike was saved by UNH keeper Cat Sheppard. The Wildcats' goalie made nine saves, including several point-blank stops to keep her team close.

Junior keeper Haylee Poltorak needed to make just three saves for her first shutout of the season and 14th of her career. Binghamton's back line of senior Erin Theiller, junior Nicole Scudero, sophomore Kayla MacKenzie and Colling stood firm all afternoon.

Binghamton next travels to Burlington for a game against Vermont on Thursday afternoon.
