Softball Gains Senior Day Split Against UMass Lowell

Bearcats win 11-5 in opener, edged in nightcap 2-1

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (8-12, 4-9 AE) gained a doubleheader split against UMass Lowell (10-13, 6-6 AE) in an America East doubleheader on Senior Day at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won the first game 11-5 before losing a 2-1, eight-inning decision in the finale.

Senior shortstop Makayla Alvarez and junior outfielder Chloe Morgan each went 4-for-8 during the doubleheader and scored twice. Alvarez also drove in a pair of runs and extended her hitting streak to a team-high seven games.

After struggling offensively in previous weeks, Binghamton pounded out 19 hits during the doubleheader. It also reached base in 10 other times at bat (six walks, four hit batsmen) and finished the day with a .394 on-base percentage.

"I liked the way we battled today," head coach Michelle Johnston said. "Everyone played for each other and we had very good at-bats today."

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning of the first game, Binghamton took advantage of a pair of UMass Lowell errors to pull to within 4-3.

The Bearcats then blew the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning. Alvarez delivered the big blow with a two-run double. Also coming through with RBI singles during the frame were sophomore catcher Quinn DeCicco, senior outfielder Lauren Martinez and junior second baseman Marissa Braito. The eight runs represents Binghamton's highest total in an inning since it also scored eight runs against Maine in the fifth inning on April 28, 2019.

Senior pitcher Rayn Gibson settled down after the second inning, surrendering just one run over the final 3.2 innings that she was in the game. Her record improved to 4-4. Sophomore pitcher Sophia Pappas completed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings in a non-save situation. Taking the loss was Lovina Capria, who is now 2-6.

Martinez joined Alvarez and Morgan with two runs scored in the first game.

For the River Hawks, Courtney Cashman drove in three runs, with a two-run home run in the second inning and a RBI triple in the sixth inning.

The 11 runs scored in the opener is the Bearcats' highest offensive output since plating 13 runs against Colgate on April 2, 2019.

The nightcap featured a pitchers' duel between freshman Hannah Mearns and Riley White of UMass Lowell. Through seven innings, the game remained scoreless.

UMass Lowell finally pulled ahead with two-out RBI singles by Sara Siteman and Maria Monoco.

The Bearcats nearly came back in the bottom of the eighth inning. They loaded the bases and senior third baseman Hannah Lyons drew a bases-loaded walk with one out. The River Hawks, however, caught a pair of line drives for the final two outs of the game.

White is now 7-2 while Mearns' record drops to 2-3. Despite the loss, she struck out a career-high nine batters and took a scoreless game into extra innings for the second time this season.

Senior first baseman Madison Germano hit a team-best .600 during the doubleheader (3-for-5).

Prior to the doubleheader, Binghamton held its annual Senior Day ceremony for its graduating players. In addition to Gibson, Martinez, Lyons and Germano, Sarah Benn and Alex Guay was also honored.

Binghamton and UMass Lowell wrap up their weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday at noon. Only the first game, however, will count towards the America East standings.

NOTES: Gibson now has 310 career strikeouts, which is tied with Rhoda Marsteller (2010-13) for seventh place all time in program history. She now also has 28 career victories, which ties Kristen Emerling (2009-12) for sixth place all time.
