VESTAL, N.Y. -- Junior designated player
Sophia Pappas went 4-for-6 and drilled a walk off home run, highlighting Binghamton's split in an America East softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. After losing the first game 4-2, the Bearcats (9-13, 4-10 AE) rebounded to beat the River Hawks (11-14, 7-6 AE) 3-2 in eight innings. Only the first game, however, counted towards the conference standings.
Pappas was one of several Binghamton players who came through at the plate during the doubleheader. Junior
Chloe Morgan went 4-for-8 (.500) while senior shortstop
Makayla Alvarez went 3-for-7 (.429) with a home run and extended her hitting streak to a team-high and career-best nine games.
"Overall, I feel like we came out a lot more consistent this weekend than we have been in the past," head coach
Michelle Johnston said. "We played for each other all weekend and put together good at-bats. We came out ready to play today and did good things both offensively and defensively."
The walk off home run by Pappas to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning of the finale marked the second time in as many days that the Bearcats and River Hawks went into extra innings. She clubbed a pitch over the left field fence for her first home run of the year. For the season, Pappas is now batting .314 with a team-best 11 RBI.Â
Freshman pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux got the complete-game win in the nightcap, raising her record to 1-1. She pitched a career-high eight innings, scattering just two runs on six hits, striking out five batters and issuing only one walk.Â
L'Amoreaux also came through at the plate, delivering a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second inning to break a scoreless tie. With the score deadlocked at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Alvarez led off with a double and later scored on a RBI ground out by sophomore first baseman
Erin Wong.
After allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning, L'Amoreaux was able to retire nine of the final 11 batters she faced.
The loss was tagged to Kaylie See, who is now 0-2.
In the opener, Alvarez began the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Abby Packard tied the score on a solo home run in the top of the second inning but junior second baseman
Marissa Braito put the Bearcats back up with a RBI double in the bottom of the same inning.
The biggest blow of the first game, however, was a two-run home run by Courtney Cashman in the top of the fourth inning which broke a 2-2 tie. It was her second home run of the weekend and put the River Hawks ahead to stay. Cashman finished the weekend series with two home runs and five RBI.Â
Binghamton left the winning run at the plate when the game ended three innings later.
Chelsea Runyon improved to 2-3 with the win and Lovina Capria notched her first save of the year. Senior pitcher
Chelsea Howard took the loss, dropping her record to 1-2.
Morgan and Pappas each finished the four-game series against UMass Lowell with a team-best .500 batting average. Morgan went 8-for-16 while Pappas was 6-for-12 with three doubles and a home run. Alvarez was 7-for-15 (.467) with three doubles, a home run and three RBI. For the season, Alvarez is now batting a team-best .353.
Binghamton heads to Hartford for a three-game conference series against the Hawks next weekend. The two teams will play a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m. and a single game at noon on Saturday.
