BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Sophomore DH
Zachary Taylor delivered a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Binghamton baseball (14-12, 14-12 America East) a 3-2 win over visiting UMBCÂ (14-20, 9-20 AE) and a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon at Rumbletown Stadium. The Bearcats won the opener 9-0.Â
With runners on first and second and one out, Taylor sent an 0-1 pitch to the wall in left field, scoring junior center fielder
Shane Marshall from second with the winning run. Marshall had opened the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior pinch hitter
TJ Wegmann. Junior shortstop
Jake Evans walked, setting the stage for Taylor's heroics.Â
The run made a winner out of sophomore reliever
Tanner Beang (W, 2-0), who worked a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts. Beang stranded two in scoring position and kept his scoreless streak going. He hasn't allowed a run in seven appearances this spring (11.2 IP).Â
The Bearcats built a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and third innings before UMBC countered with single runs in the fourth and sixth to knot the score at 2-2.Â
Senior second baseman
Alex Baratta went 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace the offense. With one out in the first, senior right fielder
Daniel Franchi tripled to right center, extending his hit streak to 12 games. Baratta plated Franchi with a groundout and then hit a two-out RBI single up the middle in the third inning to give BU a two-run lead.
Sophomore starter
Ryan Bryggman struck out seven in six innings before giving way to the bullpen.Â
In the opener, sophomore starter
Thomas Babalis (W, 4-3) fired a three-hit shutout - his second straight complete-game shutout and third in the last four outings. The offense backed him up with an 11-hit attack and stretched a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth. That was plenty for Babalis, who extended his scoreless innings streak to 18 innings - second-longest in program history behind Zach Groh, who went 24 straight in 2006. He fanned nine and only allowed a fourth-inning single, sixth-inning double and seventh-inning single.Â
Sophomore DH
Cavan Tully hit a two-out, two-run triple to cap the four-run outburst in the sixth inning. Earlier Tully had a sacrifice fly and his 3-RBI performance was a career-high. Baratta went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Franchi and sophomore left fielder
Tommy Reifler collected two hits apiece. In his first game back behind the plate after three weeks resting an injury, Wegmann reached base twice and threw out a baserunner in the first inning.Â
UMBC committed four errors which led to three unearned runs.Â
With rain expected Sunday afternoon, the doubleheader has been moved up to a 10 a.m. start.     Â
