BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Visiting UMBCÂ (16-20, 11-20 America East) limited Binghamton baseball to three runs over 16 innings and the Retrievers came away with a doubleheader sweep over the Bearcats (14-14, 14-14 AE) Sunday afternoon at Rumbletown Stadium. UMBCÂ posted wins of 1-0 and 8-3.Â
The opener was a pitchers' duel, with sophomore right-hander
Jack Collins (l, 3-1) firing a complete-game 1-hitter but absorbing the loss. UMBC pushed across the game's lone run in the third inning on a hit batter, sacrifice and RBI single. The Bearcats were held to four singles and left six stranded in the seven-inning game. They had baserunners in each of the last five innings and put the tying run on third in the seventh before a fly ball to center ended the game.Â
Senior second baseman
Alex Baratta (2-of-4) had half the team's hits. Collins struck out six and only allowed that run-scoring single. He suffered his first loss of the season despite lowering his ERA to 2.51.Â
In Game 2, BU dug itself a 4-0 hole and then after climbing back into the game with two runs in the sixth, the Bearcats surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth.Â
UMBC pitchers issued 11 walks but Binghamton managed only five hits and left 12 runners stranded.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, BU sent eight men to the plate and combined two hits with three walks to score twice and cut its deficit in half, 4-2. Senior third baseman
Justin Drpich and junior center fielder
Shane Marshall had RBI singles and BU was poised for more after loading the bases and putting the tying run on first. But a fielder's choice groundout left three stranded and cut short the rally. Binghamton then put its leadoff hitter on in the seventh and put two runners on in the eighth but was unable to cash in.Â
The Retrievers then put the game away with four runs (on just one hit) in the ninth.Â
Sophomore first baseman
Kevin Gsell went 2-for-5 and senior second baseman
Alex Baratta capped a solid weekend at the plate (7-for-15, .467) with a sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom the ninth.Â
With two series' left in the regular season, BU is tied with NJITÂ (16-16) for the second and final playoff spot from Division "B."Â The two teams meet next weekend in a key four-game set in Newark.Â
"We are disappointed with the series split but we still control our own fate for the postseason," head coach
Tim Sinicki said. "We need a good week of practice and then head to New Jersey with something to prove."Â Â Â
