HAMILTON, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore
Rory Anderson scored with 28 seconds left in the second and final sudden-death overtime period, lifting Binghamton (1-0-0) to a 2-1 victory over Colgate (0-1-0) in a non-conference men's soccer match on Thursday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field. The victory is the third straight season-opening triumph for the Bearcats as well as their fifth in the last six seasons.
With time running out in the final overtime session, Binghamton had a throw in deep in Colgate's end of the field. Junior back
Michael Bush heaved the ball into the box where Anderson was able to head the ball into the net. For Anderson, it was his first career goal.
"I thought we were very good tonight," head coach
Paul Marco said. "We were able to do many of the ideas that we have been working on since the start of preseason. Our defense was outstanding for most of the game and we had a pair of great goals. We can be even better if we keep heading in the direction that we are."
In regulation, Binghamton appeared to be in control of the match when
Oliver Svalander scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute. He broke free down the right side of the field and from just inside the box, fired the ball into the upper-right left corner of the net. At that point of the match, the Bearcats had outshot the Raiders 12-5 and had not surrendered a shot in the second half.
Just three minutes later, however, Colgate got the opportunity it had been waiting for as Ryan Krueger deadlocked the game at 1-1. Drew Fisher was credited with the assist.
After an even first overtime period, the Raiders controlled play for most of the second sudden-death session. Junior goalkeeper
Mats Roorda, however, kept Binghamton in the game with a huge save in the 103rd minute. That set the stage for Anderson's heroics.
The Bearcats' victory was its first overtime triumph since beating Lehigh 2-1 on Sept. 17, 2019. It also marked its first overtime win on the road since beating Hartford 1-0 on Oct. 11, 2017.
Svalander, who missed last season with an injury, scored three times during his freshman season (2019). Bush, meanwhile, now has three career assists.
The Bearcats outshot the host Raiders 14-10 for the match as well as 7-3 in shots on goal.
Binghamton hosts St. Bonaventure on Monday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.
NOTE: The 109th minute is the latest that Binghamton has scored a game-winning goal during its 21-year NCAA Division I era. There have been five previous double-overtime triumphs during that span. Tommy Klim's goal in the 105th minute of the Bearcats' 1-0 win over New Hampshire back on Oct. 30, 2010 was the previous mark for the latest game-winning score.
