Volleyball splits day two in Baltimore

Bearcats nab four-set win against Morgan State before dropping nightcap to Towson

BALTIMORE, MD. - The Binghamton volleyball team capped off its opening tournament with a split against Morgan State and Towson Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats powered to a 25-21, 15-25, 27-25, 28-26 win over Morgan State before falling to Towson 25-14, 25-15, 25-13.

Annie Bart led the way for BU in the morning matchup with the Bears, notching 12 kills. Emily Rail was strong defensively, contributing 16 digs.

Binghamton started the match solidly, taking a 6-3 advantage following an ace by Anna Sprys. The Bears came back to take the lead half-way through the frame, but the Bearcats used a a late 9-2 run en route to a 25-21 win.

In the second set, Morgan State used a fleury of blocks to win 25-15, but BU fought back to grab the third set, 27-25. Despite Binghamton leading for nearly the entire set, Morgan State was able to fend off two set points and added another to take a 25-24 lead before the Bearcats scored three straight to take the set. Stefana Stan capped it all off with the clinching kill.

The fourth set was similar to the third, with Binghamton leading for most of the frame, until Morgan State rallied to take a 26-25 edge. Stan and Tyra Wilson contributed a kill apiece, as the Bearcats scored three straight points to win the set and match.

Against Towson, Binghamton was able to take the lead in each of the first two sets, with a lead as late as 11-8 in the second before Towson went on runs to win. 

The Tigers used an early run in the third to put the match away.

Bart led Binghamton with five kills in the nightcap, with Rail adding eight digs.

The Bearcats return to Vestal for a week of practice before heading to Bethlehem, Pa. for a tournament at Lehigh. The team's next match is against Dartmouth Friday at 2 p.m.
