Men’s Soccer Wins 3-1 at Canisius, Improves to 4-1-0

Homler finishes with a goal and an assist as Bearcats are off to best start since 2007

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior forward Ethan Homler scored his second goal in as many games and added an assist, powering Binghamton (4-1-0) to a 3-1 win at Canisius (0-2-2) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at Demske Field. With the victory, the Bearcats have now won two straight road matches and are off to their best start since 2007.

The three goals equal Binghamton's highest offensive output since winning 3-2 at Stony Brook on Oct. 19, 2019. On defense, meanwhile, the Bearcats have surrendered only a penalty kick goal in their last 225 minutes of play.

Homler, meanwhile, continues his hot start to the season. He leads the Bearcats with three goals and seven total points. In addition, Homler has netted a pair of game-winning goals.

Homler set up the first goal when he found graduate student midfielder Noah Luescher just outside the penalty box in the 39th minute. Luescher then fired a long shot into the lower-right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

In the 44th minute, the Bearcats were awarded a penalty kick when the Golden Griffs were called for a red card inside the box. Homler placed his attempt just past the goalkeeper and into the upper-left corner of the net. He has now converted both of his penalty kick attempts this season.

The tables were turned in the 58th minute when Canisius was awarded a penalty kick following a Bearcat foul inside the box. Alessio Atzori made the shot, slicing the Binghamton lead in half.

The dagger, however, came with just 32 seconds left in regulation. Redshirt freshman forward Rory Anderson scored from close range off a corner kick for his second goal of the season. Redshirt sophomore back Carter Beaulieu was credited with the assist.

"I thought we were outstanding in the first half," head coach Paul Marco said. "We played perhaps our best soccer that we have seen in a long time. But we were lacking in the second half and give Canisius credit for getting back into the game. We are playing good soccer right now but we want to continue to mature and work on the tiny things during a match."

Redshirt junior goalkeeper P.J. Parker made his first start of the season and other than the penalty kick, stopped all three shots on goal.

Total shots for the match were 15-8 Binghamton. Each team had four shots on goal. Corner kicks favored the Bearcats by a 7-1 margin.

Binghamton is in the midst of playing five consecutive road games, with a 2-1-0 record so far during the stretch. The Bearcats are at Syracuse Tuesday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Luescher's goal was the 17th of his career. That ties him for fourth place during Binghamton's 21-year Division I era with Graham Munro (2002-05). In addition, Luescher now has 46 total points and moves into sole possession of second place during the program's Division I era … Anderson's two goals this season have come during the final minute of either regulation (tonight) or double overtime (vs. Colgate on Aug. 26) ... the 2007 Bearcat squad started the season a perfect 5-0-0, winning each of those matches by a 1-0 score.
