Women's soccer beats Cornell on road 3-1

Olivia McKnight scores twice, Anand nets brilliant game-winner in second half as BU notches fourth win

ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior midfielder Olivia McKnight scored twice and classmate Maya Anand scored a magical game-winner in the second half to propel Binghamton women's soccer (4-4-1) to a 3-1 road win over Cornell (1-4-2) Wednesday night at Berman Field.

"That was a quality overall performance from our players tonight," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "Our possession on a wet field was sharp and crisp, our attack was varied, we defended hard, and we scored three nice goals."

With the game knotted at 1-1 to start the second half, Anand produced a highlight-reel goal in the 49th minute to give BU the lead for good. McKnight sent a ball across to Anand inside the box on the left. She cut toward the middle, cut back to her left and again to the right to sidestep two Big Red defenders. With the Cornell keeper bearing down on her, Anand calmly slotted a six-yard shot into the lower left corner for her team-high fifth goal of the season.

Earlier in the night, McKnight scored an equally spectacular goal in the first half to give BU a 1-0 lead. Just 12:49 into the game, Anand sent a cross in from the right. Freshman forward Peyton Gilmore battled her defender before the ball was semi-cleared to McKnight's foot just outside the box. She promptly rifled a 20-yard shot to the top right corner.

McKnight then teamed with twin sister Victoria McKnight for the final goal in the 82nd minute. After Olivia was taken down outside the box, Victoria drilled a sinking 24-yard free kick that the Cornell keeper couldn't fully control off the bounce. The rebound was pounced on by Olivia, who scored her fourth goal of the season. Victoria had a team-high seven shots in the game, and had a sure volley goal saved off the line by a Cornell defender in the 19th minute. It was her third assist of the season.

Cornell scored their lone goal in the 38th minute to keep the score even at 1-1 at the break.

Binghamton outshot Cornell 13-8. Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak made four saves.

The Bearcats open America East play by hosting Vermont at noon on Sunday.
