Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | John Hartrick (hartrick@binghamton.edu)

Women's soccer falls to Syracuse 1-0

Bearcats surrender first-half goal to ACC hosts, see three-game unbeaten streak snapped

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Host Syracuse netted the game's lone goal in the 25th minute and the Orange (3-1) snapped Binghamton's three-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 women's soccer win over the Bearcats (2-2-1) Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium.

Senior keeper Haylee Poltorak neutralized SU's shots advantage with eight saves, several of which were stellar, including a 1-on-1 stop near the top of the box early in the second half.

Binghamton produced six corner kicks and generated better play and scoring threats in the second half but couldn't get the equalizer. The shots total was 5-3 for the Orange in the final period.

"We knew Syracuse was going to be an athletic team with an energetic attacking presence and that certainly the case in the first half," head coach Neel Bhattacharjee said. "I'm proud of how we made some adjustments in the second half and made it a much more competitive second 45 minutes. We got into the final-third a number of times but just needed a little more quality and could have then found an equalizer. We will learn from this and it's good for us to see a higher speed of play. We can move on and prep quickly for a strong Buffalo side."

Syracuse scored the winner off a cross from the right endline. The ball was partially cleared off the doorstep but it went straight to an Orange player, who knocked in the open shot from six yards.

Six minutes into the second half, BU avoided another goal when sophomore Davia Rossi cleared a deflected ball off the goal line.

Freshman midfielder Hannah Mimas, who scored a school-record 79 career goals at nearby Charles Baker High, put a ball in the back of the net with just under 18 minutes to play but a whistle for a handball negated the goal. With just under 13 minutes left, BU had another dangerous scoring threat when senior back Nicole Scudero and sophomore midfielder Victoria McKnight worked a quick passing combination and McKnight sent a through ball into the box for freshman forward Peyton Gilmore. But the SU keeper charged out to snuff out the threat.

Binghamton hosts Buffalo at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
