Men’s Soccer Beats Siena 1-0, Improves to 3-1-0

Holmer converts penalty kick in 28th minute

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Junior forward Ethan Homler scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute, leading Binghamton (3-1-0) to a 1-0 win over Siena (2-2-0) in a non-conference men's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at Hickey Field. With the victory, the Bearcats improve to 3-1-0, matching their best start since 2015.

Homler's goal was set up when a red card was called against Siena in the box in the 28th minute. Homler then slid his shot attempt in the left side of the net for his second goal of the season.

I have been scoring a lot of penalties during training so I was pretty confident and I knew the team had faith in me to bury it when we got the call," he said.

The Bearcats were a man up for the remainder of the match and finished with a 12-7 lead. The Saints, however, nearly got the equalizer in the 87th minute but junior goalkeeper Mats Roorda made a save from close range to preserve the victory.

Roorda, who finished with a pair of saves, recorded his second career solo shutout.

"I thought it was a terrific game to watch," head coach Paul Marco said. "Siena is a very good team and the first 5-7 minutes, I wasn't sure which way the match was going to go. But we stuck to the game plan pretty well and I am delighted with the guys today."

"It was a great win for the team this afternoon," Homler said. "We bounced back really well after a poor performance at Niagara and we are looking forward to our next match this weekend."

The Bearcat backline of junior Devin Heanue, junior Michael Bush, sophomore Will Noecker and senior Kosta Nika limited the Saints to just three shots on goal.

Binghamton heads to Canisius on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTE: Homler's goal marked the Bearcats' first penalty kick since current junior Sean Molloy scored at NJIT on March 23, 2021 … Homler's two goals already matches his career best in a season.
