Women’s Basketball Falls Short at NJIT 58-48

Bowman scores 14 points, Benonysdottir adds 13 points

NEWARK, N.J. --- Lyzi Litwinko scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as host NJIT (10-8, 5-2 AE) rallied to defeat Binghamton (4-9, 0-3 AE) 58-48 in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the NJIT Wellness & Fitness Center. The game was the third straight contest in which the Bearcats were only able to dress eight players.

In a game that featured several momentum swings, Litwinko went 8-for-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. In addition to her double-double, she also recorded a pair of steals.

Junior guard Denai Bowman led the Bearcats with 14 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Junior forward Birna Benonysdottir added 13 points and a pair of blocks while junior forward Clare Traeger tied her career high with 13 rebounds.

The Bearcats fell into a 19-9 hole with 5:26 left in the second period but stormed back to take a 26-21 lead at the half. Bowman and junior guard Cassidy Roberts each netted four points during that stretch while junior forward Jalyn Van Dyke sank all five of her free throw attempts.

The host Highlanders regrouped and took a 40-35 lead at the end of the third period but Binghamton scored the next eight points to go up 43-40 with 7:35 left in regulation. Benonysdottir had five of her points during that stretch and Bowman added a three-point play.

From there, however, Litwinko took over the game and the Highlanders finished with a 15-5 run. She scored 12 of her points during that span – going 5-for-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

NJIT shot 44 percent from the field (21-47) for the game while Binghamton shot only 22 percent (14-63). From the free throw line, however, the Bearcats shot 85 percent (17-20).

Roberts added seven points, seven rebounds and three assists for the Bearcats while freshman forward Genevieve Coleman finished with six points and six rebounds.

Binghamton returns home to face Hartford on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

NOTES: Benonysdottir has reached double figures in scoring in all 10 games she has played this season. She now has four blocks in her past two games … Traeger set her current career high of 13 rebounds against Ohio back on Dec. 21.
