VESTAL, N.Y. – Paula Maurina scored a game-high 23 points, leading Hartford (2-16, 1-6 AE) to a 59-57 overtime win against Binghamton (4-10, 0-4 AE) in an America East Conference game on Wednesday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The loss marked the first home contest for the Bearcats since Jan. 8 as well as the fourth straight game in which they were able to dress only eight players.
Maurina, who scored four of her points in the decisive overtime period, went 10-for-18 from the field. Abby Streeter added 12 points in the winning effort while Carmen Villalobos added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Junior forward
Birna Benonysdottir led the Bearcats with 18 points to go along with a game-high two blocks. She entered the game ranked second in the conference with 16.3 points per game.
Junior guard
Denai Bowman netted 15 points and dished out three assists. She came into the contest ranked third in the America East with 13.5 points per game.
Fellow junior guard
Cassidy Roberts, meanwhile, turned in an 11-point, 10-rebound, six-assist performance. It marked the first double-double of her career.
It was Bowman who forced overtime by scoring four points in the final 16 seconds of regulation. She scored off a turnover and was fouled with 16 seconds to go. After missing the ensuing free throw, Bowman got the rebound, was fouled again and proceeded to sink both free throws to deadlock the game.
In overtime, Benonysdottir scored the Bearcats' first six points, staking them to a 56-53 lead with 3:01 left to go in regulation. The Hawks, however, battled back and took a 57-56 lead on a jumper by Maurina with 1:57 remaining.
Roberts tied the game at 57-57 by going 1-for-2 at the free throw line with 1:13 left in overtime. Maurina, however, sank the game-winning jumper with 51 seconds left to go.
The Bearcats shot just 21-of-70 from the field for the game (30.0 percent), including just 3-of-27 from three-point range (11.1 percent). With Binghamton misfiring, Hartford finished with a 54-43 advantage in rebounding.
"It was a heartbreaker," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We put ourselves in a position to win by getting the game into overtime but for whatever reason, the shots weren't falling for us tonight. You can't come away with a lot of empty possessions - which we did tonight."
The 15 assists recorded by Binghamton represents its third-highest total of the season. The Bearcats also finished with 10 steals – which included a career-best and game-high four steals by junior forward
Jalyn Van Dyke.
Binghamton heads to UMBC on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
NOTES: Roberts' six assists tied her career high, which she set against New Hampshire on Jan. 20, 2021.
