Men’s Soccer Beats UMass Lowell 4-1 on Senior Day

Heanue and Cozetti each finish with a goal and an assist

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior back Devin Heanue and senior forward Matthew Cozetti each scored a goal and added an assist, powering Binghamton (3-6-4, 1-1-2 AE) to a 4-1 win over UMass Lowell (2-8-3, 0-3-1 AE) in an America East men's soccer game on Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex in the annual Senior Day Game. With the victory, the Bearcats are unbeaten in their last five matches, having gone 3-0-2 during that stretch.

Heanue had all of his points in the first half as the Bearcats took a 2-1 lead at the break. In the 15th minute, he scored from just outside the penalty box after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Diego Vargas. Five minutes later, Heanue assisted on senior forward Ethan Homler's first goal of the season.

The River Hawks got on the scoreboard in the 35th minute. A header by a Bearcat defender went right to Guillermo Frances Poquet, who was stationed in the middle of the box. From there, Poquet netted his fourth goal of the season.

Cozetti, meanwhile, recorded all of his points in the second half. In the 68th minute, he converted a penalty kick after senior midfielder Parker McKnight was taken down inside the penalty box. In the 81st minute, he assisted on redshirt junior midfielder Anthony Lazaridis' third goal of the season.

Binghamton out shot the River Hawks 17-7 during the match and held an 11-5 advantage in shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Mats Roorda, who has allowed just three goals during the past five matches, made four saves in the victory.

"Today was a great result," head coach Paul Marco said. "Finishing out attacks has obviously been a focus at training because we hadn't been scoring goals earlier in the year. The guys have taken better responsibility in front of the goal. Their concentration has been brought up a little bit and I feel like their courage and commitment in the box has improved."

Cozetti and McKnight were two of the four graduating players to be honored at the Bearcats' annual Senior Day ceremony before the match. They were joined by Rory Anderson and P.J. Parker

The four goals represent Binghamton's highest total against an America East opponent since it's 5-1 win over Stony Brook on Nov. 1, 2014. In addition, Cozetti's penalty kick was the first made attempt by a Binghamton player since Homler on Oct. 2, 2021 – also against UMass Lowell.

Up next for the Bearcats is a non-conference match at No. 16 Cornell on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
