Volleyball battles past UNH 3-2

Bearcats take see-saw match in five sets, move to within a half-game of first place

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton volleyball (13-6, 4-1 America East) shook off visiting New Hampshire (13-8, 2-3 AE) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at West Gym to complete a season sweep of the Wildcats and move to within a half-game of first-place in the America East standings. The Bearcats won 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 21-15, 15-5 to earn their sixth win in the last eight matches. Binghamton moved seven games over .500 for the first time since 2005 (17 years).

The see-saw match went the distance and featured 30 ties and 19 lead changes.Ā

"I knew it would be hard match," head coach Allie Yaeger said afterwards. "It was nerve-wracking to go to five but we need that experience with this group ...Ā  we need to see how we will react. I'm so happy we were challenged in that way and were able to punch through and dominate in the fifth set. This sport is all aboutĀ momentum and it kept going back and forth. We didn't want to press the panic button but just wanted to be smart, focused and match their intensity. We are still learning as a group with so many 'firsts' together. But they responded really well today."Ā

Junior hitter Tsvetelina IlievaĀ put down a match-high 20 kills and classmate Stefana Stan added a season-high 16 kills (.310). Freshman setter Lottie Scully collected 44 assists - one off her season high.Ā

In the deciding fifth set, BU roared out to a 9-2 lead and never looked back. The Bearcats hit .368 and senior blocker Anna SprysĀ blunted the UNH attack with four of her match-high nine blocks.Ā

Freshman libero Madison KonopkaĀ matched her season high with 23 digs, Ilieva notched a double-double with 11 digs to go with her 20 kills and Scully also produced a double-double with 10 digs.Ā

Binghamton continues conference play with a road match Friday at Albany.Ā
