VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton wrestling coach
Kyle Borshoff has added accomplished international wrestler and Upstate New York native Phil Barreiro to the Bearcats' coaching staff.Â
Barreiro joins Borshoff and fifth-year lead assistant
Fred Garcia as the Bearcats prepare for their 2022-23 season.
"I'm very excited for Phil to join the program this season," Borshoff said. "I knew him from American University where I was able to be his teammate as well as his coach. He has a tireless work effort and great experience in our sport. I believe his energy and intensity will quickly impact the team in a very positive way."
Barreiro's wrestling roots began at Ithaca High School and eventually took him across the world. He was a top-five placewinner at the 2018 and 2019 Pan American Championships and competed at the World Championships in 2018. A three-time Canadian champion, Barreiro won team gold at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games.

At American University, Barreiro was teammates with Borshoff in 2009-10 and then starred three more years under Borshoff's coaching tutelage. As a senior in 2012-13, he won 16 matches and placed eighth at the EIWA Championships.Â
After graduating from American in 2013, Barreiro returned home to Akwesasne, a Mohawk Reservation on the New York/Quebec border. He has been a mentor for young indigenous athletes throughout his career.  Â
