VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton (2-0) placed four players in double figures in scoring and shot 51.8 percent from the field to defeat Army (1-1) 76-61 in an America East women's basketball game on Thursday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats are off to a 2-0 start for the fourth time in five seasons.
The 76 points represents the Bearcats' highest total since they scored 104 points against Mansfield on Nov. 21, 2021. The 51.8 percent shooting (29-of-56), meanwhile, is Binghamton's best performance since shooting 52.7 percent against UMass Lowell on Feb. 19, 2022.
Senior guard
Denai Bowman led a balanced attack with 17 points, shooting 7-for-14 from the field. She also added five assists, four steals, three rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Senior forward
Clare Traeger notched her third career double-double, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She also came up with three steals.
Redshirt freshmen guards
Jadyn Weltz and
Ella Wanzer each finished with 15 points. It was a career-high for Weltz, who also dished out a game-high and career-best six assists. Wanzer, meanwhile, tied her career high, going 4-for-7 from three-point range in the process.
It was a strong last 12 minutes of the game that propelled Binghamton to the victory. The Black Knights were up 43-41 with 2:12 left in the third period. From there, however, the Bearcats went on a 7-0 run to take a 48-43 lead with one quarter left to go. Weltz and Traeger converted field goals and Wanzer drained a three-point shot during that stretch.
The Black Knights clawed back to within 60-58 with 3:56 left in regulation. Sabrina Hunter, who finished with a game-high 22 points, hit a jumper at that point.
Binghamton then slammed the door shut with a 14-0 run over the ensuing three minutes to go up 74-58 with 59 seconds left in regulation. Bowman led the way with 10 points during that span.
"We knew Army wasn't going to back down tonight, even when we got the lead," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Our players stuck together and played for each other and I am really proud of them."
Sophomore forward
Genevieve Coleman added nine points and six rebounds while freshman forward
Camryn Fauria netted six points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the process.
Binghamton finished the game 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from three-point range, marking its best performance since shooting .619 (13-of-21) against Mansfield in the game on Nov. 21, 2021.
Also as a team, Binghamton dished out 18 assists as opposed to 13 turnovers. At the other end of the court, the Bearcats scored 29 of their points off of turnovers.
Binghamton heads to Syracuse on Monday for a 7 p.m. game.
