VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior forward
Clare Traeger scored a game-high 16 points, pacing Binghamton (1-0) to a 63-46 win over Bloomsburg (0-0) in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats have now won four out of their last five season openers.
Traeger, who was one of three Bearcats players to reach double figures in scoring, went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line. It marked the first time a Binghamton player has recorded a perfect free throw percentage (with a minimum of 10 attempts) since Kai Moon shot 15-for-15 against Cornell on Nov. 9, 2018. Trager also finished with six rebounds and dished out a pair of assists against the Huskies.
Freshman forward
Camryn Fauria added 12 points in her debut, going 5-for-6 from the field. Redshirt freshman guard
Jadyn Weltz, meanwhile, filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and game highs in both assists (four) and steals (five).
It was a strong third period that gave Binghamton the separation it needed against Bloomsburg. The Huskies were up 27-25 with 6:51 remaining but the Bearcats closed out the period with a 21-1 run to go up 46-28. Fauria had six of her points and Traeger added four points during that stretch.
In the fourth period, the Bearcats built their lead to as much as 48-28 with 9:41 left to go. Bloomsburg got to within 15 points twice in the final period but by then, the Bearcats had the cushion they needed to finish out the game.
"We picked up our defense in the third period and really converted a lot of our steals and deflections into points," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "Our good defense really helped propel our offense."
Senior guard
Denai Bowman finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists, three steals and set her career high with five blocks. Sophomore forward
Genevieve Coleman chipped in six points and pulled down a team-high and career-best nine rebounds.
Katelin Starr led Bloomsburg with 14 and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
As a team, Binghamton shot 19-for-22 from the free throw line (86.4 percent) and scored 25 of its points off of turnovers. The Bearcats also finished the game with 13 steals.
Binghamton hosts Army on Thursday at 7 p.m.
NOTE: Because Bloomsburg is a Division II program, the game did not count in their win-loss record.
