Softball Gains Split in Opening Day of 2022

Bearcats beat Radford 3-2, fall 7-4 to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Sophomore Allison L'Amoreaux homered, drove in a pair of runs and got a pitching decision as Binghamton (1-1) gained a split in the opening day of the Georgia Southern/Battle of the Boro Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at the GS Complex. The Bearcats won 3-2 over Radford (0-2) in the first game before dropping the nightcap to the host Eagles (1-0) 7-4.

L/Amoreaux pitched the first five innings against the Highlanders to get the win. At the plate, she finished the day 3-for-7 (.429). L'Amoreaux was the starting first baseman in the game against the Georgia Southern.

Senior third baseman Alli Richmond went 3-for-6 (.500) over the two games, scored twice, clubbed two doubles and had an RBI. Sophomore catcher Hailey Ehlers batted a team-best .600 during the day (3-for-5) while senior Sophia Pappas went 2-for-4 with a double and recorded a two-inning save.

"I was really proud of each and every one of the girls today," head coach Jess Bump said. "Game one we pieced together some good quality at bats and got out of some big jams defensively to get the win even though we didn't play our best ball. We lost some focus against a really good Georgia Southern lineup but overall I was happy with our presence in the box, on the mound and in the dugout.

L'Amoreaux opened the scoring against Radford with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. After the Highlanders scored twice in the top of the third inning, Richmond was the catalyst in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Bearcats moved back in front 3-2. She doubled home the tying run and scored one batter later on a single by junior outfielder Jillian Fittry.

L'Amoreaux departed the mound after a scoreless fifth inning and Pappas tossed a pair of scoreless innings to record the save.

Taking the loss for Radford was Skyler DeHart, whose record fell to 0-1.

Ehlers finished 2-for-2 against the Highlanders.

In the nightcap, L'Amoreaux and Richmond staked the Bearcats to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. L'Amoreaux led off the frame with a home run over the left field fence. Richmond followed with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice. Fittry scored the final run on an RBI single by senior second baseman Marissa Braito.

The Bearcats had a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning but the host Eagles turned the game around by plating six runs. The big blow was a grand slam by Faith Shirley.

Binghamton then went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.

Rylee Waldrep got the win and is now 1-0. The loss was tagged to freshman pitcher Lindsey Walter in her first career decision.

L'Amoreaux and Richmond each finished with a pair of hits against the Eagles.

As a team, the Bearcats hit .302 in the two games.

Fittry finished the day 2-for-6 (.333) with a run scored and a RBI.

Binghamton continues play at the Battle of the Boro on Saturday, with a rematch against Georgia State at 12:30 as well as a 5:30 game against East Tennessee State
