ALBANY, N.Y. – Helene Haegerstrand scored a game-high 15 points and Ellen Hahne added 14 points, lifting Albany (18-8, 11-4 AE) to a 61-48 win over Binghamton (5-18, 1-12 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at SEFCU Arena. The contest marked the Bearcats' third straight road game in a span of five days.
Haegerstand went 5-of-8 from the field, connected on two of her three shots from beyond the three-point arc and swished three of her four free throw attempts. She also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Hahne, meanwhile, was 6-of-11 from the floor. Joining them in double figures was teammate Kayla Cooper, who finished with 10 points and seven rebounds
For Binghamton, junior forward
Birna Benonysdottir netted a team-best 14 points and tied for the game high with seven rebounds. She went 6-of-12 from the floor, including a three-point field goal. Benonysdottir entered the game ranked second in the America East with 14.7 points per game.
Senior guard
Hayley Moore finished with 11 points, marking the second straight game she has reached double figures in scoring. She was 4-for-6 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Although she was held under her scoring average of 14.2 points per game, junior guard
Denai Bowman still managed to fill up the stat sheet. She turned in an eight-point, five-rebound, five-assist, one-block, two-steal performance.
Binghamton stayed within striking distance of Albany for much of the game. With 1:18 left in the third period, the Bearcats were within 45-37.
In the fourth period, however, the Great Danes went on an 8-2 run in a span of 3:54 to go up 57-41 with 5:34 left in regulation. Koi Sims led Albany with four points during that stretch.
The closest the Bearcats came the rest of the way was 59-48 on a three-point field goal by junior guard
Cassidy Roberts with 1:29 left in regulation. The final points, however, were scored on a pair of free throws by Cooper with 16 second remaining.
Junior forward
Clare Traeger added eight points and four rebounds for Binghamton.
The Great Danes entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense (48.7 ppg.). They held the Bearcats to 36.5 percent shooting (19-of-52) and shot 43.6 percent themselves (24-of-55).
With the Bearcats continuing to dress only eight players, Albany held a commanding 28-8 lead in bench points.
Binghamton returns home to the Events Center for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday against UMass Lowell.
