VESTAL, N.Y. – Junior guard
Denai Bowman scored a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds as well as six assists, powering Binghamton (6-18, 2-12 AE) to a 71-54 win over UMass Lowell (9-13, 6-7 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The victory for the Bearcats came during their annual Play4Kay Game.
Bowman, who now has nine career games with at least 20 points, went 9-for-15 from the field and swished both of her free throw attempts. She continues to rank third in the America East with a career-high 14.0 points per game.
The Bearcats had three other players reach double figures in scoring. Junior forward
Clare Traeger finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks, junior forward
Birna Benonysdottir netted 12 points and fellow junior forward
Jalyn Van Dyke added 11 points. In addition, senior guard
Hayley Moore finished with nine points, knocking down three shots from beyond the three-point arc in the process.
Binghamton shot 52.7 percent from the field (29-of-55), which is its second-best shooting performance of the season. In addition, the 71 points represents the Bearcats' third-highest offensive output this season.
"I am very proud of our team and how they stuck together today and believed in themselves," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "I'm proud of the way that they have continued to come in every day and today, we were able to get over the hump."
The Bearcats took command of the game in the second period, outscoring the River Hawks 24-10 to go up 39-22 at the half. Binghamton shot a blistering 62.5 percent from the field during that stretch (10-of-16). Moore scored all nine of her points during that period while Bowman netted eighth of her points.
UMass Lowell fought back in the second half, trimming the deficit to 52-45 on a three-point field goal by Kharis Idom with 7:43 left to go in regulation.
The knockout blow, however, was a 10-1 run during the final 2:40 of the game. Traeger led the way with six points during that stretch.
The Bearcats finished with 18 assists as opposed to 16 turnovers. In addition, they scored 25 of their points of off UMass Lowell turnovers.
Idom finished with 14 points for the River Hawks while her teammate Kaylen Banwareesingh led the squad with 16 points.
Junior guard
Cassidy Roberts tied Bowman for the game high with six assists and recorded a game-high four steals.
Binghamton heads to Hartford on Monday for a 5 p.m. game.
