Women’s lacrosse blows past Colgate 14-4

Manning has nine saves, Carroll scores four in strong win

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse used a dominant second half to surge past Colgate 14-4 Wednesday evening at Andy Kerr Stadium. The BU defense forced 19 turnovers, Emily Manning made nine of 13 save chances, and freshman Abigail Carroll scored four goals in the victory.

"I am really proud of this team today for earning their first win of the season," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "Our defense was incredibly dialed in to the game plan and Emily Manning was a brick wall between the pipes. We showed what we are capable of and I'm excited for what's ahead with this team."

The Bearcats dominated possession from the start, forcing an array of turnovers in the first quarter, but Colgate's goalie Amelia Cunningham helped keep the Raiders in the game, making eight saves in her first ten chances.

With the score tied at two in the second, Binghamton scored two crucial goals to get the lead at the break. Hayley Weltner put one away and Carroll scored in the closing minutes to make it 4-2.

BU continued the run in the second half, scoring another eight goals in a row before Colgate finally put one away. Madison Murphy, Jesse Barer and scored twice over the course of the run, and Weltner and Isabella Meli each scored once.

Olivia Muscolino scored her second goal of the season, and Carroll added one more for good measure to finalize the 14-4 finish.

Defensively, Kelly Quinn, Paige Alletzhauser and Carroll caused two turnovers apiece. Binghamton led the ground ball battle 25-14.

The Bearcats will return to Vestal for their home opener against Bucknell Saturday. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
