DURHAM, N.H. – Host New Hampshire (14-12, 9-8 America East) broke away from a 50-50 tie in the final 4:19 and held off Binghamton men's basketball (11-15, 8-9 AE) 66-62 Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The teams began the day tied for fourth place in the standings, one game out of second but a half-game out of sixth.
The Wildcats ran off seven straight points after BU had tied it up at 50. New Hampshire hit a pair of dagger 3s in the final 1:32 and then made 6-of-6 free throws in the closing 32 seconds to seal the win.
The Bearcats played the game without injured leading scorer
Jacob Falko (15.4 ppg.).
"They got some key rebounds in some crucial moments and we made a few fatal errors on defense down the stretch," head coach
Levell Sanders said. "Points are hard to come by on the road and we didn't make enough plays to win today. We have one game left in the regular season and we have to do everything in our power to go to UMBC and get a win." Â
Junior forward
Christian Hinckson produced his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard
John McGriff had 12 points and classmate
Kellen Amos added nine points. Junior forward
George Tinsley chipped in seven points and five boards and in the process, became just the seventh Bearcat to reach the 600-point, 400-rebound club.
Hinckson scored 10 of his points in the second half and BU led by five early in the period, 36-31. But an 11-5 UNH run gave them the lead with 9:28 to play and the Bearcats never reclaimed it. The game featured eight ties and six lead changes.
The Bearcats fell behind by eight early in the game and trailed 24-16 with 5:07 left in the first half before rallying. Hinckson keyed a 10-0 run with five points and McGriff added three. Hinckson pulled down nine rebounds in the first half and after missing 10-of-13 to start, BU hit 8-of-16 to end the period and forge a 28-28 halftime tie.
Already assured of a postseason berth, Binghamton closes out the regular season Tuesday night at UMBC. Â
