VESTAL, N.Y. – Maeve Carroll turned in a 12-pont, 14-rebound, seven-assist, one-block, two-steal performance, powering Maine (11-10-8-3 AE) to a 48-46 win over Binghamton (5-14, 1-8 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at Dr. Bai Lee Court at the Events Center. The contest marked the second straight meeting between the two teams this weekend on the Bearcats' home court.
Carroll led a balanced Maine attack by going 5-for-11 from the floor and swishing both of her free throws. She averaged 13.0 rebounds during the two weekend games.
Also reaching double figures for the Black Bears were Anne Simon and Caroline Bornemann, each of whom finished with 11 points, and Alba Orois with 10 points.
For the Bearcats, junior guard
Denai Bowman continued her hot hand, pouring in a game-high 17 points. She went 6-for 12 from the field and 5-of-7 from the free throw line. In addition, she tied for the team lead with seven rebounds, dished out three assists, recorded a steal and blocked a pair of shots.
For the season, Bowman now ranks second in the America East with a career-high 14.7 points per game. Over the Bearcats' past seven games, she has averaged 16.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 1.7 steals per game.
Junior forward
Clare Traeger added 10 points, marking the second straight game she has reached double figures in scoring. Junior guard
Cassidy Roberts tied Bowman for the team high with seven rebounds.
In a game that featured three ties and four lead changes, Orois put the Black Bears up for good on a three-point field goal with 1:34 left to go in regulation. With that basket, Maine was up 45-44.
After a Bearcat turnover, Bornemann nailed a jumper with 32 seconds left to go, padding the lead to 47-44. Bowman then trimmed the deficit to 47-46 on a jumper with 24 seconds left to go.
The Black Bears only made one of their final four free throw attempts but the Bearcats were unable to score on their final two possessions of the game.
"I was really proud of how we competed today," head coach
Bethann Shapiro Ord said. "We don't look like a team with the record that we have. Our players don't put their heads down. They keep after it and they battle. We played four games this week with only eight players but the with the way we played out there, you'd never know that."
Binghamton shot 41 percent from the game (17-of-42) as opposed to 37 percent for Maine (18-of-49). The Black Bears, however, held an 11-1 advantage in second-chance points and a 14-4 led in points off of turnovers.
The Bearcats end their five-game homestand against Vermont on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
NOTES: Binghamton's last four games have been decided by a margin of 5.7 points. Two of those games have been decided by two points or less.
