COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Binghamton (9-9) managed a split in its first day at the Maryland Softball Invitational on Friday. The Bearcats defeated Army (5-16) 11-1 in five innings but were unable to hold the lead against North Dakota State (15-12) and lost 5-4.
Freshman outfield
Alayna Harbaugh finished the day 4-for-7 (.571) and drove in three runs. For the season, she is now batting a team-best .386.
Fellow freshman outfielder
Sarah Rende went 3-for-6 (.500) while senior infielder
Alli Richmond was 3-for-7 (.429). Richmond, who is batting .345 for the season, drove in a run and now has a team-best 11 RBI. Rende, meanwhile, upped her season average to .343.
Senior infielder
Makayla Alvarez, meanwhile, was 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.
With the Bearcats down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning in the opener against Army, Richmond keyed a four-run inning with her RBI single. Two of the other four Bearcat runs were scored on Black Knight errors.
Binghamton scored four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up 8-1. Alvarez provided the big blow with a two-run triple. She later scored on an RBI single by junior catcher
Quinn DeCicco.
Rende, meanwhile, sparked a three-run bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run triple. She later scored on a RBI groundout by Alvarez.
Sophomore pitcher
Allison L'Amoreaux pitched the first four innings to raise her record to 6-4. Sophomore pitched
Lindsey Walter tossed a scoreless fifth inning in relief.
The loss was tagged to Olivia Farris, whose record dropped to 0-9.
Richmond and Rende each finished the opener 2-for-3.
The 11 runs marks the Bearcats' highest total of the year as well as their second straight game with at least 10 runs.
Against North Dakota State, the Bearcat offense initially picked where they left off, with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Harbaugh belted a two-run triple during the frame.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior outfielder
Chloe Morgan stole home on a wild pitch, padding the lead to 4-0.
Things began to unravel for Binghamton, however, in the top of the fifth inning. The Bearcats committed a pair of errors and the Bison scored three times.
North Dakota State scored twice more in the top of the seventh inning to go up 5-4. Molly Gates doubled home the tying run and later scored on a fielder's choice.
The Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Graduate student pitcher
Chelsea Howard held the Bison in check for the first four innings and finished with a career-high eight strikeouts. Her record fell, however, to 3-4.
Savy Williams of the Bison improved to 4-2 with the victory while Paige Vargas nailed down her first save of the year
Harbaugh finished the second game 3-for-4.
Binghamton continues play at the Maryland Tournament on Saturday with games against the host Terps (4:15 p.m.) and Monmouth (6:30 p.m.).
