DETROIT, MI. - Binghamton wrestling wrapped up the 2021-22 season Friday, as Brevin Cassella, Joe Doyle and Lou DePrez all competed at the Little Caesar's Arena in Detroit. Doyle had a dominant win in the consolation bracket to highlight Binghamton's day.
Doyle began his day by getting taken down by No. 14 Luke Luffman of Illinois. The senior then went on to dominate on top, getting a series of back points to lead 13-2 after two periods. Despite getting reversed late, he walked away with a 14-4 major decision.
He then dropped a tough one to No. 11 Gary Traub of Oregon State. He earned back points in the second period but gave up a late takedown to fall 7-4 and end his NCAA Championship.
DePrez made it to the quarterfinals against No. 1 Max Dean, but fell in a 4-3 decision. The 197-pounder got an opening takedown and had over a minute of ride time at 2-2 in the third period. A review late in the period gave Dean a takedown, and DePrez couldn't get a final takedown.
In the blood round, DePrez trailed 1-0 to Greg Bulsak of Rutgers in the third period, and got a takedown to lead 2-1 late but gave up a reversal. His NCAA Championship came a win away from an All-American nod.
Brevin Cassella closed out his season with a tight 2-0 loss to Jake Wentzel of Pittsburgh. An early takedown proved to be the difference, as Cassella was strong on top but couldn't generate a turn.
The Bearcats finished the season with four NCAA qualifiers and six wins in Detroit.
