VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse recovered from a 3-0 deficit to take down Quinnipiac 16-11 in its final non conference tilt. The Bearcats (5-4) used balanced scoring, stifling second half defense and a 21-9 advantage in draw controls to propel themselves to victory.
"It was really important for us to win a tight one," head coach Stephanie Allen. "I'm pleased with our resiliency because we've had a tendency to let early deficits grow instead of coming back. Quinnipiac is a very good team and I think it was a good confidence boost heading into conference play."
The Bearcats really shifted the game on the draw, as Abby Carroll and Sofia Afkham led the way with six and five draw controls respectively. Kenna Newman continued her stellar play, scoring four goals and adding two assists. She has 11 goals and 11 assists in her last six games. Marisa Tancredi, who has also come on strong of late, added a hat trick.
Quinnipiac started the first quarter well, scoring the first three goals. BU responded with two big goals to climb back in it, and used a Jesse Barer finish to tie things up at five to end the quarter.
The Bobcats responded with a good defensive second quarter, holding BU without a goal until the final minute of the half. Binghamton also played solid defense, holding the visitors to two in the frame, but went into the half down 7-6.
Binghamton turned the tides in the third quarter, rattling off six of the seven goals scored in the period. Newman scored twice to lead the team's efforts.
Quinnipiac scored two of the first three goals of the period, but Binghamton ran away with the contest as Emily Masera scored twice down the stretch.
In the 16-11 win, Abigail Carroll, Olivia Muscolino, Masera and Barer all scored twice to add to Newman and Tancredi's efforts.
The Bearcats will now dive into America East play, as they take on Albany on the road next Saturday. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
