ALBANY, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse rallied back from a 6-1 deficit, but its comeback fell short as Albany won Saturday's contest 15-11 at John Fallon Field. The Bearcats fell to 0-1 in conference play.
Kenna Newman, Abigail Carroll and Madison Murphy had two goals apiece for BU, and five others got on the scoresheet. Emily Manning made 12 saves in goal defensively. Despite not scoring, Hayley Weltner was solid in the midfield, causing three turnovers.
The Great Danes (3-5 overall, 1-0 AE) got off to a strong start, scoring the first four goals of the contest to put the Bearcats in an early hole. Newman got the team on the board, but another Albany goal made it 5-1 after the first quarter.
Another goal by the hosts made it 6-1, but BU stayed within reach the rest of the half. Olivia Muscolino and Kristen Scheidel scored back-to-back goals to make it 7-4 late in the quarter before Albany added one more before the break.
The third quarter put Binghamton in solid position to make a comeback, as the Bearcats outscored the Great Danes 3-1 in the period. Murphy, Tancredi and Carroll all scored and BU trailed by just two goals heading into the final quarter.
Both sides scored a goal early in the fourth quarter, but Albany went on a key 3-0 run to put the game out of reach. The final seven minutes featured five goals, as three went to BU and two went to the Great Danes, resulting in the 15-11 final score.
The Bearcats continue America East play next weekend at home against Stony Brook. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
