Women’s lacrosse takes down UMBC 20-14

Tancredi nets five goals to lead BU, defense holds Retrievers to one goal in final 19 minutes

BALTIMORE, MD. - Binghamton women's lacrosse outscored UMBC 8-1 over the final 19 minutes en route to a 20-14 victory over UMBC Wednesday afternoon. The Bearcats led for a majority of the contest, and picked up their first America East win of the season.

BU was led by freshman Marisa Tancredi's five goals. Fellow freshman Olivia Muscolino added four goals and an assist. Junior Kenna Newman also had four goals and an assist. Emily Masera and Kristen Scheidel had two goals apiece.

The Bearcats forced 17 turnovers and had a 19-17 edge in draw controls.

The first quarter began with solid offensive execution by both sides. The score went back-and-forth over the opening 15 minutes of play as Binghamton (6-5, 1-1 AE) held a narrow 5-4 advantage heading to the second quarter.

A key 3-0 run for BU opened up the lead, as Tancredi, Scheidel and Newman all scored to make it 8-4. The Retrievers fought back to outscore Binghamton 4-2 in the closing minutes to narrow the gap at the break to 10-8.

UMBC carried momentum early in the third quarter, taking the lead for the first time at 13-12 with about four minutes to play in the period. The Bearcats clamped down the defense, scoring four consecutive times to build a 16-13 edge with 15 minutes remaining.

The Bearcats dominated the final quarter, scoring another four unanswered goals before the Retrievers scored a goal with one second on the clock. Madison Murphy got on the scoresheet at the 9:13 mark, and Abigail Carroll followed suit with her first of the game a few minutes later. Muscolino put Binghamton at 20 goals on the day to close out the scoring.

Binghamton takes on UMass Lowell Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The team will celebrate Senior Day prior to a 1 p.m. start.
