Women’s lacrosse falls to UMass Lowell 11-9

Morchower notches hat-trick in defeat

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse fell in a tight contest to UMass Lowell 11-9 in America East action Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats led 4-3 after the first quarter, but the offense slowed as the visitors played strong defense for the remainder of the contest.

Senior attacker Sidra Morchower scored three times for BU to lead the offense. Kenna Newman added two goals and two assists. Defensively, Gabrielle Marshall caused two turnovers and Kelly Quinn picked up five ground balls. Emily Manning made nine saves.

Newman scored the first goal of the contest, and despite a River Hawk equalizer, Abby Carroll and Morchower combined for two straight to make it 3-1 in favor of BU. UMass Lowell responded with two more goals in the quarter, but another Morchower finish gave Binghamton the 4-3 edge after 15 minutes.

A strong second quarter turned the tides for the River Hawks, as they outscored BU 4-2 in the period. Trailing 7-4, the Bearcats managed two late goals by Hayley Weltner and Marisa Tancredi to close the gap at the break.

The third quarter went back-and-forth, but a critical UMass Lowell goal in the final seconds made it 10-8. Newman and Olivia Muscolino each scored in the period.

Neither side generated much offense in the fourth quarter, but Morchower did add her third goal of the contest to round out Binghamton's scoring. The River Hawks put home a game-clinching goal at the 4:20 mark to complete the 11-9 finish.

Hayley Weltner collected seven draw controls for Binghamton in the loss.

The Bearcats will have two weeks before their next contest against Stony Brook. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
