VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's lacrosse outscored Lafayette 12-1 over the middle two quarters en route to an 18-8 victory Wednesday evening at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The Bearcats led by 10 or more goals for the final 23 minutes of the contest.
"We've been waiting for things to click offensively, and we knew success was coming sometime soon," head coach Stephanie Allen said. "It was good to see how cohesive we were. I'm proud of the way we played today."
Olivia Muscolino led the way for BU, scoring a season-high five goals. The mark is the most by any Bearcat in 2022. Madison Murphy added four goals and now has a team-leading 12 on the season. Hayley Weltner (three goals) rounds out Binghamton's players with three or more goals.
Defensively, Cassidy Evans caused three turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Sofia Afkham grabbed a program record 11 draw controls, two more than the previous record.
The Bearcats opened up a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Jesse Barer, Murphy and Muscolino. Lafayette responded by scoring three of the game's next four to get within one before a huge Binghamton run ended the half.
Weltner scored the final goal of the first quarter, and Binghamton proceeded to score the first six goals of the second quarter to take control. Isabella Meli put home her first finish of the season and Emily Masera added her second of the year to spark the Bearcats during the run.
Lafayette scored once before halftime, but BU outscored the Leopards 6-0 in the third quarter. Murphy notched three straight to end the period. The Leopards were able to put away four goals in the final period, but the Bearcats ran away with the 18-8 win. Sidra Morchower scored her first goal of the season to round out the scoring.
Binghamton has a quick turnaround as they take on Marist Saturday in Vestal. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
